Psalm 34:8 (ESV)

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

Reflection

“Taste and see.” Not “think and calculate.” Not “study and deduce.” There is a kind of knowing God that only comes through tasting, through the actual experience of leaning your weight on him and finding him faithful. You can know all the right doctrines about God’s goodness and still be a functional atheist in the details of your daily life, still be running to a dozen lesser refuges before you ever run to him.

Here’s the truth this verse confronts in you and me today: we are refuge seekers by nature. The only question is where we run. We run to control, to the approval of others, to numbing distractions, to our own competence, hoping these things will hold the weight of our fear and need. And they can’t. They were never meant to. Only God is big enough, good enough, and near enough to be a true refuge for weak, anxious, sinning people like us.

This is why the gospel is such good news. Because of Christ, you don’t have to earn your way into God’s shelter. He has already thrown open the door. He has already proven his goodness at the cross, where he gave his own Son so that sinners could run to him and find welcome instead of wrath.

So today, don’t just think about God’s goodness. Taste it. Run to him with whatever is heavy in your heart, and find, once again, that he is enough.

Lord, be my refuge today. Teach my heart to taste your goodness, not just recite it.
