James 1:2–4 (ESV)

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Reflection

Count it all joy. Have you ever read a command that seemed more impossible than that one? James isn’t writing to people with easy lives. He’s writing to scattered, suffering believers, and he tells them to welcome trials the way you’d welcome a friend. That’s not natural. That’s grace reaching into your trouble and rewriting your response to it.

Here’s what makes this possible: James doesn’t ask you to pretend the pain isn’t real, or to manufacture some fake smile while your world falls apart. He asks you to see past the trial to what God is doing through it. Testing produces endurance. Endurance, left to do its complete work, produces a maturity you couldn’t get any other way. God is after something deeper than your comfort. He’s after your character, your Christlikeness, your completeness in him.

This means your hardest days are not evidence that God has abandoned his plan for you. They’re often the very tool he’s using to accomplish it. You don’t have the wisdom to always see this in the moment (that’s why James tells you, just a few verses later, to ask God for wisdom when you lack it). But you can rest in this: nothing touches your life that isn’t first filtered through the hands of a Father who is committed to finishing the good work he started in you.

Lord, when trials come, give me eyes to see your purpose and a heart that trusts your goodness more than it trusts my comfort.
