Psalm 55:22 (ESV)
Cast your burden on the LORD,
and he will sustain you;
he will never permit
the righteous to be moved.
Reflection
You carried it to bed with you last night. You woke up with it still sitting on your chest this morning. Maybe it’s a wayward child, a diagnosis you didn’t want, a marriage that feels brittle, or a job that’s slipping through your fingers. Whatever it is, you’ve been hauling it around like it’s yours to fix, yours to hold, yours to manage. And it’s exhausting you.
Here’s the quiet grace tucked into this verse: you were never meant to carry it alone. “Cast your burden on Yahweh” isn’t a suggestion for the spiritually elite. It’s an invitation for the weary, the anxious, the ones who have run out of strength to keep white-knuckling their way through life. God doesn’t ask you to be strong enough to bear your burden. He asks you to let go of it and hand it to him.
And notice the promise that follows: he will sustain you. Not necessarily remove the trial, but sustain you in the middle of it. This is the gospel in miniature. You are weak, but he is not. You are unable, but he is more than able. Jesus already carried the ultimate weight, your sin, your guilt, your shame, to the cross, so that you could learn to release every lesser burden into his capable hands.
So today, open your tired hands. Let him carry what you were never meant to hold.
Lord, I’m tired of carrying this. I release it into your hands and ask you to sustain me today.
