Psalm 119:105 (ESV)

Nun

Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.

Reflection

“Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.” Not a floodlight that illumines the whole landscape of your future, just a lamp. Enough light for the next step. That’s how God designed his grace to work in our lives, not in massive downloads of clarity about everything to come, but in daily, sufficient light for today’s portion of the road.

If you’re honest, you probably wish you had more light. You want to see around the next bend, to know how that relationship will turn out, whether that diagnosis will resolve, what next year holds. God, in his kindness, often withholds that kind of light from us. Why? Because he’s growing something in us that floodlights would destroy: dependent faith. A lamp for your feet means you have to keep walking, keep trusting, keep coming back to his word tomorrow for tomorrow’s portion.

This is grace. God hasn’t left you to stumble in darkness, guessing your way through life. He has given you his word, final, sufficient, trustworthy, and he has given you Christ, the Word made flesh, who is himself the light of the world. You don’t need to see the whole path. You need to know the One who holds the lamp.

So today, don’t demand more light than God has promised. Ask instead for a heart that treasures the light you’ve been given, and feet willing to walk by it, one step at a time.

Lord, give me grace to trust your word enough to take the next step, even when I cannot see the whole road ahead.
