Psalm 84:11 (ESV)
For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
the LORD bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does he withhold
from those who walk uprightly.
Reflection
Some mornings you wake up already tired, already bracing for what the day will demand of you, already wondering if you have enough light to see the next step and enough protection to survive what’s coming. The psalmist knew that weariness too, and he answers it with a picture: Yahweh is a sun and a shield.
Think about what that means. A sun gives light, warmth, growth, direction. You don’t manufacture sunlight; you simply live in it. A shield gives protection, covering, safety in the face of what would otherwise destroy you. You don’t need to be your own defense. God himself is both of these things for you today. He illuminates what you cannot see on your own, and he guards what you could never protect by your own strength.
But notice what follows: he gives grace and glory, and he withholds no good thing. This isn’t a God who rations his kindness, doling out just enough to get by. He is lavish. And here’s the mercy underneath the mercy: the “blameless” walking spoken of here isn’t sinless perfection. It’s the honest, dependent walk of someone who has run out of self-reliance and has found, in Christ, a righteousness that isn’t their own. Jesus is the one who walked blamelessly in our place, so that every good thing the Father has could be ours.
You don’t have light or strength enough for today. He does. Rest in him.
Lord, be my sun and my shield today; I have nothing good apart from you.
