Psalm 91:1–2 (ESV)
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
Reflection
Most of us don’t wake up thinking we need a hiding place. We wake up thinking we need a plan, a little more energy, or maybe just a better day than yesterday. But the psalmist knows something we easily forget: we are more vulnerable than we admit, and we were never designed to stand on our own.
Notice the word “dwells.” This isn’t a quick visit to God when the pressure rises. It’s a settled, daily abiding in the presence of the One who is greater than anything I will face. The secret place is not a location on a map. It is a relationship with a Person.
Here is the humbling truth: left to myself, I build shelters out of my own competence, my own control, my own reputation. They look sturdy until the first storm. Then I discover how thin the walls really are.
But God does not scold me for needing a refuge. He is the refuge. He doesn’t merely point me toward safety; He offers Himself as the fortress. And in Christ, the cost of my entrance has already been paid. I do not earn my way into the shadow of the Almighty. I am carried in by grace.
Notice too that the psalmist says, “I will say.” Faith speaks. Today, preach to yourself what is true: He is my refuge, my fortress, my God.
Lord, I am weak and I know it. Today I run to You, my refuge, and rest in the shelter Christ has purchased for me.
