Old Testament Support
Exodus 34:6-7 — “The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.””
Psalm 103:12 — “As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.”
New Testament Support
Ephesians 1:7 — “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.”
1 John 1:9 — “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Theological Implications
God’s forgiveness is not a casual overlooking of sin but a costly pardon purchased by Christ’s substitutionary death. The cross satisfies divine justice while demonstrating divine mercy, enabling God to be both just and the justifier of those who have faith in Jesus. This forgiveness is complete, removing both the guilt and penalty of sin from those who trust in Christ.
Believers rest securely in God’s forgiveness, knowing their sins are fully pardoned through Christ’s finished work. This truth frees us from condemnation and empowers us to extend forgiveness to others as we have been forgiven. Our ongoing confession and repentance flow from grateful hearts already secured in God’s unchanging mercy.
Prayer
Merciful God, You are the LORD, the LORD, gracious and slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. You proclaimed Your own name to Moses, and in that name I hear the wonder of who You are: a God who forgives iniquity and transgression and sin. I come to You in awe that You, who are holy beyond all measure, delight to pardon.
I know my sin is no small thing. You do not wave it away or pretend it never happened. You are the One who will by no means clear the guilty, and yet You have made a way. In Christ I have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of my trespasses, according to the riches of Your grace. The price was real and it was paid in full. At the cross Your justice was satisfied and Your mercy was revealed, and You were shown to be both just and the One who justifies those who trust in Jesus. I marvel at a love that cost You so much.
Thank You that my forgiveness is complete. As far as the east is from the west, You have removed my transgressions from me. The guilt that once crushed me, the penalty I deserved, You have carried away. I am not left standing under condemnation. I stand in Christ, forgiven and free.
You are faithful and just to forgive me when I confess, and to cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Because I am secure in Your unchanging mercy, I can bring my failures into the light without fear. Let my confession and repentance rise from a grateful heart, not a frightened one.
Teach me to forgive as I have been forgiven. Soften every hardness in me toward those who have wronged me, and let Your mercy flow through me to others. I worship You, God of boundless pardon. You are worthy of all my praise, now and forever. Amen.
