Definition
God’s attribute of being the ultimate source and sustainer of all life, both physical and spiritual. He alone possesses life inherently and grants it to all creatures, offering eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Old Testament Support
Genesis 2:7 — “then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”
Deuteronomy 30:20 — “loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”
New Testament Support
John 5:26 — “For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.”
Acts 17:25 — “nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.”
Theological Implications
God is not merely alive but is life itself, the self-existent One who depends on nothing outside Himself. Every breath we take, every heartbeat, flows from His gracious hand, making all creation utterly dependent upon Him. This truth calls us to worship Him as the fountain of all vitality and existence.
Recognizing God as life-giver transforms our daily perspective from self-sufficiency to grateful dependence. In Christ, we receive not just biological life but eternal, abundant life that begins now and extends into eternity. This reality compels us to seek Him daily as our true source and to share this life-giving gospel with others who are spiritually dead.
Prayer
Lord God, You are life itself. Not merely a living being among others, but the fountain from which all life flows, the self-existent One who needs nothing and no one, yet freely gives breath and heartbeat and being to every creature that draws breath. I stand in awe before You, for You formed me from dust and breathed into me the very breath I am breathing right now as I pray. Every beat of my heart is a gift from Your gracious hand.
I worship You because You have life in Yourself, and You granted that same self-existent life to Your Son, that through Him I might have life everlasting. You are not served by human hands as though You lacked anything; rather, it is I who lack everything apart from You. You give to me life and breath and all things. How could I ever boast in my own strength when every moment I exist is because You are holding me in being?
You alone are my life and my length of days. Apart from You I am dust returning to dust, but bound to You, I am alive now and forever. Thank You for not leaving me in spiritual death but for sending Jesus, the resurrection and the life, so that believing in Him I might never truly die. You have taken a heart of stone and made it beat with new, eternal life. This is grace beyond my understanding.
Teach me, Lord, to live each day in grateful dependence rather than self-sufficiency. Let me not forget that the very air filling my lungs right now is Your gift. Stir in me a longing to seek You daily as my true source, and give me courage to carry this life-giving gospel to those around me who are spiritually dead, that they too might taste the abundant life found only in You.
I adore You, Lord of life. In Jesus’s name, amen.
