Definition

God’s uprightness refers to His perfect moral integrity and absolute conformity to what is right and just. He is the standard of righteousness itself, eternally consistent with His own perfect nature.

Old Testament Support

Deuteronomy 32:4 — “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.”
Psalm 25:8 — “Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in the way.”

New Testament Support

1 John 1:5 — “This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”
Revelation 15:3 — “Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations!”

Theological Implications

God’s uprightness means He never deviates from perfect righteousness in His character, judgments, or actions. Unlike human standards of morality that shift with culture and time, God’s uprightness is eternal and unchanging—He is the very definition of what is right. This attribute assures us that all God’s dealings with His creation flow from perfect moral integrity.

Because God is upright, believers can trust Him completely in every circumstance, knowing He will never act contrary to His righteous nature. His uprightness calls us to pursue holiness and integrity in our own lives, reflecting His character. When we face injustice or confusion, we can rest in the certainty that our upright God will ultimately make all things right.

Prayer

O Lord my God, You are the Rock, and Your work is perfect. I lift my eyes to You in wonder, for all Your ways are justice, and there is no iniquity in You. You are not a shifting shadow or a standard that bends with the times. You are upright, eternally and unchangingly so, and in You there is no darkness at all. I worship You, the very definition of what is right and good.

How good it is to know that You are good and upright, O Lord. You do not stand far off in Your holiness, but You instruct sinners like me in the way. You could have left me to wander, but Your righteousness moved toward me in mercy, teaching me, guiding me, correcting me. I adore You for this, that Your perfect integrity does not condemn me from a distance but draws near to lead me home.

Great and amazing are Your deeds, Almighty King. Just and true are Your ways. When I consider how easily my own heart shifts, how quickly my convictions bend under pressure, I am amazed all the more that You never waver. You have never once acted against Your own righteous nature. You cannot. You will not. This is my confidence and my joy.

Because You are upright, I can trust You completely, even when I cannot see the full picture, even when the world around me seems tangled in injustice and confusion. I rest in this: You will make all things right, for You are incapable of doing otherwise. Teach me to walk in integrity before You, to let my yes be yes and my no be no, reflecting even a glimmer of Your perfect righteousness.

I worship You, upright God. You are my Rock, my standard, my unshaken hope. In You alone I trust, now and forever. Amen.
