Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV)

Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.

Reflection

You and I like to think of ourselves as reasonable people. We weigh the evidence, we make our plans, and we trust our own judgment to get us where we need to go. But here’s the quiet, humbling truth this proverb won’t let us escape: your understanding is not enough. It never was. You don’t have the wisdom, the knowledge of the future, or the control over outcomes that true self-reliance would require. None of us do.

This isn’t a call to stop thinking or planning. It’s a call to stop trusting the wrong thing. “Lean not on your own understanding” means admitting that your heart, left to itself, will chart a course toward self-sufficiency rather than toward God. We need something, Someone, outside ourselves to make our paths straight, because our own vision is too limited and our own hearts too easily deceived.

This is where grace steps in. Jesus didn’t wait for us to get wise enough or faithful enough to trust God with all our hearts. He lived the perfect trust we could never muster, and he died to forgive us for all the ways we’ve leaned on ourselves instead of him. Because of him, we can bring our divided, doubting hearts to the Father today and find him patient, near, and willing to guide us still.

So acknowledge him now, in this decision, this worry, this unclear path. He is trustworthy even when your understanding runs out.

Lord, my heart still wants to lean on myself. Teach me today to trust you with all of it, and thank you that Jesus is sufficient where I am not.
