"Majestic Son" — Hebrews 1:1–3

Opening Context: C.S. Lewis and the Growing Vision of Christ
- Pastor Troy began with a scene from The Chronicles of Narnia: Lucy meets Aslan and exclaims, "You’re bigger!" Aslan replies, "I’m not bigger. You are. Every year you grow bigger, you will find me bigger."
- Central idea: As we grow spiritually, our vision of Jesus expands — our present knowledge of Him is never the full measure of His reality.
- Hebrews strategically presents the splendor and grandeur of Jesus Christ like no other New Testament book.
Background and Audience of Hebrews
- Written by an unknown author to Jewish believers facing intense persecution and suffering.
- They were growing weary — drifting spiritually, willfully neglecting corporate worship (Hebrews 10), not in flagrant rebellion but in exhaustion-driven complacency.
- The writer’s stunning response: he doesn’t magnify their problems; he magnifies Jesus.
- Foundational principle: "If they keep growing in Christ, they will keep going strong in life."
Scripture Walk-Through: Hebrews 1:1–3
Verse 1 — God’s Final Word in His Son
- Hebrews 1:1: "Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets…"
- Hebrews 1:2: "But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…"
- Jesus is not another spokesman in a long line of prophets — He is the speech itself, God’s final, definitive Word.
Seven Descriptions of Jesus (vv. 2–3)
The author packs seven theological descriptions into a single run-on sentence:
1. Jesus Is Heir of All Things (v. 2)
- Jesus is the rightful owner of the universe — "everything ultimately belongs to Him, answers to Him, and is moving toward His rule."
- He is not just visiting this world; He owns it.
2. Jesus Is Creator of the World (v. 2)
- "Through whom also he created the world" — Jesus existed before creation; He is not a created being.
- Creation starts with and ends with Jesus (Alpha and Omega).
- Resembles Colossians 1:15–20 — same theological vibes.
3. Jesus Is the Radiance of God’s Glory (v. 3)
- "He is the radiance of the glory of God" — Jesus doesn’t merely reflect God’s glory; He radiates it, because divine glory belongs to Him.
- Illustration: If God the Father is the sun, Jesus is the sunlight — inseparable.
- Jesus is not a mirror; He is the source of God’s glory.
4. Jesus Is the Exact Imprint of God’s Nature (v. 3)
- "The exact imprint of his nature" — like a steel stamp, Jesus is the perfect, exact representation of God in human flesh.
- Not a carbon copy or replica — He shares the same divine essence as the Father while remaining a distinct person.
5. Jesus Is the Sustainer of the Universe (v. 3)
- "He upholds the universe by the word of his power" — Jesus isn’t straining to hold up the world; He’s actively carrying, maintaining, guiding, and steering history toward a glorious conclusion.
6. Jesus Is the Provider of Purification for Sins (v. 3)
- "After making purification for sins…" — Jesus achieved what the Old Testament sacrificial system never could.
- Theological bombshell: Jesus is both the high priest and the sacrifice.
- In the old system, the priest brought an animal — he couldn’t offer himself because he was a sinner too.
- Christ is the perfect high priest, therefore the only perfect sacrifice.
7. Jesus Is Enthroned at God’s Right Hand (v. 3)
- "He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high"
- Old Testament priests never sat — there was always another sacrifice to make.
- Jesus sat down because His work was finished, sufficient, satisfying to God’s wrath.
- The crucified Son is now the enthroned Son.
Why This Matters: Three Key Applications
1. Jesus Christ Is Fully God
- This is a die-for issue.
- Every other world religion denies Jesus’s divinity and strips Him of His deity.
- If Jesus were merely a prophet or moral leader, He couldn’t save anyone or be worthy of worship.
- When you look at Jesus, you are looking at God Himself — "God in human flesh."
- Your faith in Jesus is anchored to the Creator of the universe, not just a created being.
2. Our Sins Are Totally, Fully, Completely Forgiven
- The phrase "he sat down" is a massive theological detail.
- Hebrews 10:11–14: Old Testament priests stood daily, offering repeated sacrifices "which can never take away sins." But Christ "offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins" — then He sat down.
- "By a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified."
- Your forgiveness is secure, finished, permanent — it cannot be undone.
- God will not wake up tomorrow and change His mind about you.
- If your sin could reverse His work, He’d have to stand back up — but He remains seated.
- There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.
- You don’t need to walk in guilt or punish yourself for sins Jesus already paid for.
- No hidden fine print; no "ifs" — you are forgiven and free.
3. Jesus Offers Ultimate Meaning, Security, and Peace in Chaos
- If His word effortlessly holds billions of galaxies together, His word is more than capable of holding your life together.
- When life falls apart and the news is terrifying, Jesus is actively carrying you and moving your life toward a glorious conclusion.
- Resign from your role as general manager of the universe.
- Anxiety can be a form of functional atheism — the belief that if you drop the ball, the universe collapses.
- Let the seated posture of Jesus become the posture of your soul:
- Resting over striving
- Peacefulness over panic
- Authority over fear
- Trusting over worrying
- Confidence over consternation
Closing Exhortation and Self-Assessment
- No matter how long you’ve known Christ (five minutes or fifty years), you haven’t begun to exhaust who He is.
- Pastor Troy’s reflection: decades of ministry and thousands of books later, he’s still discovering new angles of Jesus’s glory — "My vocabulary will never fully exhaust who He is."
- If you keep growing, you’ll see just how big He is.
Three Diagnostic Questions:
- Are you growing? — in knowledge of Christ, love for Jesus, obedience to Jesus? If not, dig in (join a Bible study at Grace).
- Is your view of Jesus grand enough? — Is your life marked more by fear or victory? Shrinking back or stepping up?
- Are you walking in guilt/shame or forgiveness? — God doesn’t shame; He convicts so we repent and stay right with Him.
- Walk in your freedom — you can’t do anything to make God love you more, and you’ve never done anything to make Him love you less.
Closing Prayer (Themes)
- Help us grow in knowledge, love, and obedience so we can go strong in life.
- Expand our view of Jesus — make it more glorious than ever before.
- Help us walk in the freedom of forgiveness.
- We declare the deity and divinity of Jesus Christ — there is no one like Jesus.
