Grace Church Sermon – Sunday 2026-10-18

“Faithful Builder” — Hebrews 3:1-6 Sermon Recap

Speaker: Pastor Troy

Opening Context: Church Commissioning

  • Before the message, Pastor Troy shared that Grace Church’s Pocatello, Idaho campus has grown enough to spin off as its own congregation: Portneuf Valley Church.
  • The church prayed over this new plant, asking God to keep them unified, gospel-centered, and committed to reading, obeying, and preaching the Word.

Opening Context and Aim

  • Pastor Troy set up Hebrews 3:1-6 by establishing just how highly Moses was regarded in Jewish history and thought: Israel’s great deliverer, lawgiver, and prophet, a man who knew God “mouth to mouth” (Numbers 12:6-8) and whose humility and accomplishments were unmatched (Deuteronomy 34:10-12).
  • The point: if anyone deserved supreme honor among the Hebrews, it was Moses. Hebrews 3 then makes the bold claim that Jesus deserves even more.

Scripture Walk-Through

The Comparison Introduced

  • Passage: Hebrews 3:1-6
  • “Consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house” (Hebrews 3:1-2).
  • “Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself” (Hebrews 3:3).
  • “Every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God” (Hebrews 3:4).
  • “Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant… but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope” (Hebrews 3:5-6).

Key Theological Themes and Applications

1) Similarity Before Superiority

  • The author doesn’t diminish Moses to elevate Jesus; both are called faithful. Jesus is simply greater in every way.
  • Jesus uniquely holds two titles never paired elsewhere in the New Testament: “apostle” (God’s messenger to people) and “high priest” (the people’s representative to God). He is a two-way bridge: God coming down to man, and man going up to God.

2) The Builder Is Greater Than the House

  • Moses belonged to God’s house; Jesus built the house (Hebrews 3:3-4).
  • Just as no one praises a blueprint over the architect, Jesus deserves more glory than Moses because He is the builder, and in fact the Creator of all things.

3) Servant Versus Son

  • Moses served faithfully in God’s house; Jesus reigns faithfully over God’s house (Hebrews 3:5-6).
  • Moses’s entire ministry pointed forward to Christ: “to testify to the things that were to be spoken later.” His greatness is enhanced, not diminished, because he pointed beyond himself to Jesus.

Three Strategies to Keep Faith Moving Forward

Strategy 1: Consider Jesus

  • The original audience was tempted to retreat to the familiarity of the old covenant rather than press on in costly faith in Christ.
  • Pastor Troy’s illustration: it would be like refusing a fully-loaded burrito from Chipotle to chew on a painting of food instead, or like a husband embracing his wife’s shadow rather than his actual wife. Going back to the law instead of Christ trades reality for a shadow.
  • The call: compare Jesus to anything or anyone you think might give you life, and he will always win the comparison.

Strategy 2: Don’t Confuse God’s Servants with God’s Son

  • Moses was a faithful servant, not the Son. It’s easy today to over-elevate a pastor, influencer, or ministry onto a pedestal that belongs to Christ alone.
  • Test: if a leader’s failure collapses your faith, you were more attached to God’s servant than to God’s Son.
  • Pastor Troy shared personally that when Christian leaders fall, he is saddened but not flattened, because his joy is tied to Christ’s integrity, not human frailty.

Strategy 3: Grip the Hope

  • “We are his house… if indeed we hold fast our confidence” (Hebrews 3:6) is a statement of evidence, not a condition for staying saved.
  • Holding fast doesn’t earn salvation; it confirms that salvation was real all along. Perseverance reveals genuine faith rather than purchasing it.
  • Those who walk away (apostasy) show they were never truly part of the house; they didn’t lose salvation but revealed its absence.

Who God Is

  • Faithful: both in His Son’s work and in keeping His house secure.
  • Sovereign Builder and Creator: Jesus built the people of God and created the universe itself.
  • Trustworthy, never disappointing, even when His servants fail or disappoint us.

Who You Are in Christ

  • You are part of God’s house, His people, if your life shows ongoing, genuine faith in Christ.
  • Assurance of salvation is not found in a one-time childhood prayer but in a life currently moving forward in interest, growth, and obedience toward Jesus.

Examples and Illustrations from Pastor Troy

  • Moses’s unmatched biblical résumé (deliverer, prophet, lawgiver, intimate with God) set up the “no comparison” argument for Christ’s superiority.
  • The burrito vs. painting of food, and the husband embracing a shadow instead of his wife: illustrating the folly of trading the reality of Christ for an old, familiar shadow.
  • “Life is a conveyor belt of disappointments”: a reminder not to let general life disappointment bleed into thinking Christ himself is disappointing.
  • The example of someone resting assurance of salvation on a prayer prayed at age eight or ten, rather than on a life currently following Jesus.

Practical Calls to Action

  • Keep considering Jesus: compare Him to anything you’re tempted to return to, and watch Him win every time.
  • Don’t put any human leader, ministry, or tradition on the pedestal that belongs to Christ alone.
  • Examine whether your life shows forward motion in faith; don’t rest assurance on a past prayer alone.
  • Pray for those who professed faith but show no fruit or forward movement toward Christ.
  • Keep gripping Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit; don’t drift or turn back.

Closing Thought

When following Christ feels costly and the old life looks easier, the answer is always the same: consider Jesus. Run the comparison with anything else competing for your hope, and you’ll find there’s no competition. He never disappoints, and those who belong to Him keep moving forward in faith by the Spirit’s power.
