Proverbs 27:17 (ESV)

Iron sharpens iron,
and one man sharpens another.

Reflection

There is a quiet lie that many of us believe without ever saying it out loud: that spiritual maturity is something we can achieve in isolation. We picture the solitary believer, Bible open, heart disciplined, growing strong all on their own. But that is not how God designed His people to flourish. Iron sharpens iron. Growth happens in friction, in relationship, in the sometimes uncomfortable process of letting another person speak truth into our lives.

Here is the humbling reality: we need each other because we are not finished products. We still have blind spots we cannot see, sins we minimize, and weaknesses we excuse. Left alone, we drift. We rationalize. We grow dull. God, in His kindness, gives us friends who will tell us the truth, who will push back when we need pushing, who will comfort us when we need comfort, and who will point us, again and again, to Christ.

This kind of friendship costs something. It means being willing to be sharpened, which is rarely painless. It means loving someone enough to speak hard words in grace, and humble enough to receive them. We can only do this because Jesus first drew near to us in our dullness, patiently refining us, never giving up on the work He began.

So today, thank God for the friends who sharpen you, and ask Him to make you that kind of friend to someone else.

Lord, give me the humility to be sharpened and the love to sharpen others, for your glory.
