Isaiah 64:8 (ESV)

But now, O LORD, you are our Father;
we are the clay, and you are our potter;
we are all the work of your hand.

Reflection

Have you ever noticed how quickly we try to be our own potter? We wake up with a plan for who we should be, how our day should go, and what a good life should look like. Then we spend our energy pressing and shaping our circumstances, our relationships, and even ourselves, as if we were the ones holding the wheel.

Isaiah speaks these words in a moment of honest brokenness. The people have failed. They know it. And yet, in the middle of their mess, they don’t run from God. They run to Him, and they say something beautiful: “You are our Father.” They don’t say “you should have been better to us” or “we’ll fix ourselves and come back.” They simply come as clay, and clay has nothing to offer the potter except its need.

That is good news for weak people like me. Clay doesn’t have to be impressive. Clay doesn’t have to hold itself together. The potter’s hands are patient, skilled, and loving, and He is not surprised by what He finds on the wheel. He is not shocked by the cracks. In Christ, the Father has already come near to the clay, and He has not given up on His work.

Today you may feel marred, unfinished, or misshapen. Don’t hide that from Him. The Potter is still working, and what He begins, He finishes.

Father, I am clay and You are the Potter. Forgive me for grabbing the wheel. Today, I rest in Your hands and trust Your work in me.
