Psalm 100:4–5 (ESV)

Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!

For the LORD is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.

Reflection

Most of us don’t wake up naturally thankful. We wake up aware of what is missing, what is broken, and what is waiting on our to-do list. Left to ourselves, our hearts drift toward complaint, and we usually don’t even notice the drift until our mood has already been shaped by it.

That is why this psalm gives a command. “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving.” The psalmist knows that gratitude is not something we simply feel; it is something we are called to practice, and it begins with remembering who God is. Notice the reason given: “For Yahweh is good.” Our thanksgiving is not anchored in how the day is going or how well we are doing. It is anchored in the character of the One who welcomes us in.

And what a welcome it is. We do not approach those gates by our own merit. We come because of a loving kindness that “endures forever,” a faithfulness that stretches across “all generations.” That means it has outlasted every one of my failures and will outlast the ones I have not yet committed. His mercy was not exhausted by yesterday, and it was never dependent on my getting everything right.

Here is the wonder of grace: the door is open, not because I earned it, but because Christ has opened it for me. Today, whatever you face, you are not walking toward a locked gate. You are walking toward a good Father whose kindness has no expiration date.

Lord, turn my complaining heart toward thanksgiving. Remind me this morning that You are good, and that Your mercy is new for me today. Amen.
