Psalm 62:1–2 (ESV)

To the choirmaster: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.

Reflection

You wake up today and before your feet hit the floor, your mind is already scanning for safety. That’s just how we’re built after the fall. We look for something solid to stand on: a bank account, a relationship, a reputation, a plan that finally works. And none of it holds the weight we put on it. It can’t. Only God was ever meant to bear that weight.

Notice the psalmist doesn’t say his soul tries to rest in God, or wishes it could. He says, “My soul rests in God alone.” That’s not natural confidence. That’s grace-given rest, the kind that only comes after you’ve exhausted every other resting place and found them all to be sand. The psalmist had probably tried other rocks too. He knew what it was to be shaken. And in the shaking, God met him, held him, and became his rock.

This is exactly why you needed a Savior. You were never going to manufacture unshakeable peace out of your own strength or circumstances. But Christ has secured for you a salvation that doesn’t fluctuate with your feelings or your failures. He is your fortress today, not because your life is stable, but because he is.

So when the ground under you feels uncertain this morning, let your soul do what it was made to do: rest. Not in your performance, but in him.

Lord, when I’m tempted to seek safety anywhere else, draw my restless heart back to rest in you alone. You are my rock. Hold me today.
