Psalm 27:1 (ESV)

Of David.

The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?

Reflection

Some mornings the fear arrives before you even open your eyes. It’s waiting there, dressed up as worry about the day ahead, about money, about your health, about a relationship that feels like it’s unraveling. You don’t invite it in. It just comes, the way it always does, because you live in a broken world with a heart that’s still prone to be afraid of the wrong things and forget the right God.

But look at what David declares here. Not “Yahweh gives me a strategy for dealing with fear.” Not “Yahweh removes every scary thing from my path.” He says, “Yahweh is my light and my salvation.” Present tense. Right now, in whatever dark hallway you’re walking through today, he is light. He is salvation. He doesn’t hand you a flashlight and send you off alone. He is the light itself, going before you, with you, for you.

This is why you don’t have to manufacture your own courage this morning. Courage isn’t found by trying harder to not be afraid. It’s found by fixing your eyes on who God actually is. He is your strength when yours runs out by nine a.m. He is your salvation when you’ve made another mess of things. Whom shall you fear? Nothing and no one is bigger than the God who holds you.

Lord, be my light in whatever darkness I face today, and let that truth be greater than my fear.
