Definition
God’s absolute supremacy and transcendence over all created things, powers, and authorities in both the visible and invisible realms. He is infinitely exalted above every name, rank, and dominion that exists or can be conceived.
Old Testament Support
Psalm 97:9 — “For you, O LORD, are most high over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.”
1 Chronicles 29:11 — “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all.”
New Testament Support
Ephesians 1:21 — “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.”
Philippians 2:9 — “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name.”
Theological Implications
God’s position as far above all establishes His absolute sovereignty and incomparability. No created being, earthly authority, or spiritual power can rival His majesty or challenge His throne. This supreme exaltation belongs to the Father and is shared fully with Christ Jesus, who has been given the name above every name through His redemptive work.
This truth provides believers with profound comfort and confidence in trials. When we face overwhelming circumstances, hostile authorities, or spiritual opposition, we can rest in the certainty that our God reigns supreme over all. Our worship should reflect this reality, giving Him the highest honor and submitting every competing allegiance to His unmatched authority.
Prayer
Most High God, You are exalted far above all the earth, far above every god, every throne, every power that dares to call itself great. I lift my eyes above the noise of this world and I see You seated above it all, unshaken, unrivaled, utterly supreme. There is none like You, and there never will be.
Yours is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on the earth belongs to You. You are exalted as head above all, and my heart bows before that truth. I don’t bring You my worship because You need it, but because You alone deserve it. Every name that is named, in this age or the one to come, bends low before Your name.
I praise You that this throne is not distant or cold. You have given this same exaltation to Jesus, raising Him far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, bestowing on Him the name above every name. When I call on Christ, I call on the One who reigns supreme, who has already triumphed, who holds every hostile power under His feet.
So when my circumstances feel overwhelming, when authorities around me seem immovable, when fear whispers that the darkness is winning, let me remember: You are still far above all. Nothing outranks You. Nothing surprises You. Nothing can topple Your throne.
Forgive me for the moments I’ve let lesser things sit where only You belong, my worries, my need for control, the approval of people. Take Your rightful place above it all in my heart today. I worship You, Most High God, far above everything, forever enthroned, forever worthy. Amen.
