Matthew 22:37–39 (ESV)

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Reflection

Let’s be honest about what happens when we read these words. We nod along. They sound beautiful. And then, if we’re really paying attention, a quiet dread creeps in. All your heart. All your soul. All your mind. Who among us has loved God like that for even one hour? Who has loved a neighbor with the same energy we pour into protecting our own comfort, our own reputation, our own plans?

This is the point at which many of us reach for the wrong response. We either lower the standard so we can feel okay, or we grit our teeth and promise to try harder. But Jesus isn’t handing you a self-improvement project. He is exposing the depth of your need. The greatest commandment is a mirror, and what it shows is a person who cannot do this on their own.

And that is good news, because the One who spoke these words is the only person who ever kept them. He loved the Father perfectly in every thought and desire. He loved neighbors so completely that He laid down His life for those who had not loved Him back. Where I have failed, He succeeded, and He offers His record to me as a gift.

So obedience grows not from fear but from wonder. We love because He first loved us. His grace doesn’t excuse my weakness; it changes my heart from the inside out, one morning at a time.

Lord, I confess that my love is divided and weak. Thank You that Christ loved perfectly in my place. Grow in me a love that flows from Your love for me.
