Sunday, November 8, 2026

Definition

God’s attribute of forgiving sin is His gracious willingness and power to pardon transgressions, removing the guilt and penalty of sin from those who repent and trust in Christ. This forgiveness flows from His mercy and is made possible through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Old Testament Support

Psalm 103:12 — “as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.”
Isaiah 43:25 — “I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.”
Micah 7:18 — “Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love.”

New Testament Support

Ephesians 1:7 — “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace”
1 John 1:9 — “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Colossians 2:13 — “And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses”

Theological Implications

God’s forgiveness is not based on human merit but flows exclusively from His grace and finds its ultimate expression in the cross of Christ. Through Christ’s substitutionary atonement, God maintains both His perfect justice and His pardoning mercy, satisfying His holy wrath while freely forgiving repentant sinners. This forgiveness is complete and eternal, securing the believer’s justification and reconciliation with God.

For believers, God’s forgiving nature provides assurance of salvation and freedom from guilt and condemnation. This divine forgiveness calls us to extend forgiveness to others, reflecting God’s character in our relationships. The certainty of God’s ongoing forgiveness encourages honest confession of sin and fuels our worship, gratitude, and devotion to the One who has pardoned us so completely.

Prayer

Father, I come to You with a heart full of wonder, because You are a God who forgives. Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression? You do not hold on to Your anger forever, because You delight in steadfast love. I marvel that mercy is not a reluctant thing in You. It is Your joy.

I praise You that as far as the east is from the west, so far have You removed my transgressions from me. I could never measure that distance, and I could never close it. You have put my sin where I cannot find it and where You have chosen not to remember it. For Your own sake You blot it out, and the guilt I carried is carried no more.

Lord Jesus, I worship You for the price of this pardon. In You I have redemption through Your blood, the forgiveness of my trespasses, according to the riches of Your grace. I brought nothing to earn it. I was dead in my trespasses, and You made me alive together with Christ, having forgiven all of it. Here Your justice and Your mercy meet. Your holy wrath was satisfied at the cross, and so You can forgive freely without ceasing to be righteous.

Faithful and just God, I thank You that when I confess my sins, You do not hesitate or hold me at arm’s length. You forgive and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Teach me to bring my failures into Your light without fear, knowing that no condemnation waits for me there, only Your welcome.

Let this forgiveness shape the way I live. Make me quick to forgive others, as You have forgiven me. Fill my days with gratitude and my lips with praise. You have pardoned me completely and forever, and I am Yours. To You be all glory, now and always. Amen.
